Alphabet's Nest this week rolled out an update to its app platform that allows owners to stream Nest Cam feeds directly to fourth-generation Apple TV units, while introducing a new video clip creation and sharing feature called "instaclip."
A trio of popular apps received mid-cycle updates Tuesday, with popular email client Mailbox adding a number of new swipe gestures, Philips's Hue smart light bulb controller was given a streamlined UI, and connected thermostat maker Nest gaining support for the new "Works with Nest" program.
It's hard to believe a device like the the Nest Learning Thermostat wasn't invented earlier; it blends existing hardware technology with customized software to solve a number simple of problems many people deal with on a daily basis, and does so elegantly.
Nest is updating its mobile companion app on iOS and Android to include support for the upcoming Protect smoke detector, which it says will begin shipping soon. From the app, Protect owners will be able to view the status of all of their Nest smoke detectors, including whether they're sensing any problems, when their last tests were, and how their backup batteries are doing.
