Google has supported two-factor authentication for more than five years now, but the search giant is making it a little easier to use this week. Previously, you've had to manually enter a code from an authenticator app or via SMS, but Google is introducing a new prompt that you can tap on your phone to approve login requests. It's very similar to how Twitter's two-factor authentication works, generating a notification that you accept from a phone and it approves the login attempt....

Developers have been searching for interesting ways to use 3D Touch since it was introduced on the iPhone 6S last year, and now Google has come up with one of the more clever uses of it: a button that just displays weird facts. With an update to the core Google iOS app yesterday, you'll now find an "I'm Feeling Curious" button as one of the shortcuts displayed when 3D Touching its icon. Press it, and the app will open up to a random question â like "How many hairs are on your head?" â its answer,...

For instance, Now will pop up a notification in the morning telling you it's...

Apple and Google haven’t exactly been been on the best of terms in recent years. The stock YouTube iOS app disappearing is a more recent example of the bad blood between the two companies. Google tried its best to sherlock Apple’s 3D technology in the iOS 6 Maps app, and many moves Apple and Google make can be seen as direct outcomes of the bad blood Steve Jobs spoke of when he vowed to wage thermonuclear war on Android. Apple and Google may hate each other, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t compet...

I like Chrome. In fact it's my browser of choice. I like it so much I wish there was an iOS version. Well, Google has updated it's Google Search app so that it looks and feels sort of like Chrome. The main purpose of the Google Search app is to search and to act as a port to Google's apps. The latest update brings a better UI to the iPad, has instant previews of searches and lets you browse sites side-by-side with the search results. I want to know who worked on this and why didn't they put this much...

I was always confused at how popular the Google Mobile App was on the iPhone. Did people use it? It was the third most popular free iOS app of all time! Why didn't people just use the search bar in Safari instead? I don't know! In any case, the Google Mobile App got a complete revamp complete with a new name: Google Search. The app is more than a glorified web-site-in-an-app now, with snazzy gestures that reveal a toolbar with specific search options (Images, News, Shopping, etc) and the usual voice...

There's an ocean of apps out there. Whether you just got your iPhone and are feeling adrift or you're a salty old dog seeing what you might've missed, here are the absolutely essential apps. Twitter: Twitter thankfully didn't make too many changes when they gobbled up the already-great Tweetie 2 from Atebits—same clean interface, same Tweet swiping, and the same it-feels-so-good pull to refresh mechanism. Free. Facebook: The new, panel-based interface takes a little getting used to, but once you're...
The wait for Google Goggles—the crazy good visual search app—to hit the iPhone was shorter than we thought. Today, it's finally been added as part of the Google Mobile App. Once you're in the Google app, just click the camera to activate Goggles. From there, you can identify and search for info on landmarks, logos, books, DVDs, etc. And as Google continues to tweak the function—it's still in Google Labs—you'll eventually be able to identify animals, foods, and whatever else Mountain View's mad...

Gmail and Google Calender notifications, pushed to your iPhone home screen? Yes please. This might be enough to lure me away from the iPhone's native mail app. The Google Mobile iTunes app update should be available here any time now. The interface, shown above, looks intuitive, and I can see it being especially helpful on the calendar side. Plus, always remember: the more notifications you check on your phone, the more rude popular people think you are.
Google Mobile App for the iPhone has just received a significant update bringing push notifications for Gmail and Google calendar to your mobile. Get your hands on it here (update:…
If you'd previously downloaded the Google Mobile app for iPad, you might have noticed it's changed recently—as Apple has finally approved it. The previous version was merely the iPhone version, scaled to size. Free to download, the new version integrates the My Location bar—but other than that it's pretty much the same as it ever was, with access to Gmail, Calendar, Latitude, and Documents. Search options include Maps, Images, News and Shopping.

Other than that, the update brings a number of bug fixes, one that fixes pasting into the search box and one that sh...
